More evacuations in Memphis as Mississippi rises

Général — Posté par tomyly @ 06:31
MEMPHIS, Tennessee – The swollen Mississippi River has air max Shoes swamped houses in Memphis and threatens to consume many more, but its rise has been slow enough that some people were clinging to their normal lives just a bit longer. That much was clear Sunday from an unexpected smell — barbecue — in a neighborhood that already lost three houses. With the river just feet from her single-story home, Shirley Woods had the grill going in the backyard, cooking ribs, pork chops, chicken and hot dogs. She was getting ready to make potato salad. When she woke up at first light, she was prepared to leave if the Mississippi had gotten high enough, but she decided she had time to at least celebrate Mother's Day here with relatives. "I'll give it another day, and if it comes up much higher, we're getting out of here," Woods said. Memphis residents have been abandoning low-lying homes for days as the dangerously surging river threatened to crest at 48 feet (14.63 meters), just shy of the 48.7-foot (14.84-meter) record, set by a devastating 1937 flood. Officials went door-to-door Sunday, warning about 240 people to get out before the river reaches its expected peak Tuesday. In all, residents in more than 1,300 homes have been told to go, and some 370 people were staying in shelters. But while some evacuated their homes, others came as spectators. At Beale Street, the famous thoroughfare known for blues, dozens gawked and snapped photos as water pooled at the end of the road. Traffic was heavy downtown on a day the streets would normally be quiet. The river is "probably the biggest tourist attraction in Memphis," said Scott Umstead, who made the half-hour drive from Collierville with his wife and their three children. Flood waters were about a half-mile (800 meters) from the street's world-famous nightspots, which are on higher ground. The river already reached record levels in some areas upstream, thanks to heavy rains and snowmelt. It spared Kentucky and northwest Tennessee any catastrophic flooding and no deaths have been reported there, but some low lying towns and farmland along the banks of the river have been inundated. And there's tension farther south in the Mississippi Delta and Louisiana, where the river could create a slow-developing disaster. There's so much water in Air Jordan 2011 shoes the Mississippi that the tributaries that feed into it are also backed up, creating some of the worst flood problems so far. Along the overflowing Nonconnah Creek in south Memphis, Cedric Blue has watched water engulf three homes on his street. Blue has lived in his one-story house since he was born, and fears the rising water will wash away a lifetime of memories. A yellow "No Outlet" street sign near his house was nearly covered. A garbage can floated in the high water. Blue was angry that he hadn't seen any officials in his neighborhood. "I just want a new life and relocation," he said. "I would like the elected officials to come down here to see this with their own eyes and see what we're going through." Col. Vernie Reichling, Army Corps of Engineers commander for the Memphis district, said the homes in most danger of flooding are in areas not protected by levees or floodwalls, including near Nonconnah Creek and the Wolf and Loosahatchie rivers. About 150 Corps workers were walking along levees and monitoring performance of pump stations along what Reichling called the "wicked" Mississippi. "There should be no concern for any levees to fail," he said in a downtown park on a bluff overlooking the river. Downriver in Louisiana, officials warned residents that even if a key spillway northwest of Baton Rouge were to be opened, residents could expect water 5 to 25 feet (1.5 to 7.5 meters) deep over parts of seven parishes. Some of Louisiana's most valuable farmland is expected to be inundated. The Morganza spillway, northwest of Baton Rouge, could be opened as early as Thursday, but a decision has not yet been made. A separate spillway northwest of New Orleans was to be opened Monday, helping ease the pressure on levees there, and inmates were set to be evacuated from the low-lying state prison in Angola. Engineers say it is unlikely any major metropolitan areas will be Air Max 2011 inundated as the water pushes downstream over the next week or two. Nonetheless, officials are cautious. Since the flood of 1927, a disaster that killed hundreds, Congress has made protecting the cities on the lower Mississippi a priority, spending billions to fortify cities with floodwalls and carve out overflow basins and ponds — a departure from the "levees-only" strategy that led to the 1927 disaster.

Messi leads Barca into Champions League quarters

BARCELONA, Spain (AP)—Arsenal’s only shot of air maxes night turned the game—in favor of Barcelona. Robin van Persie was ejected in the 56th minute for shooting after the referee had blown his whistle, Xavi Hernandez scored as Barcelona pressed its man advantage and Lionel Messi followed with a penalty kick for his second goal of the night. With a 3-1 victory Tuesday and a 4-3 aggregate win, Barcelona advanced to the Champions League quarterfinals and eliminated the Gunners for the second straight year. “It’s a total joke,” Van Persie said. “I tried to explain there were 95,000 people jumping up. How can I hear the whistle? He’s been bad all evening, whistling against us. I don’t know why he’s here tonight. We feel betrayed a bit. When it was 1-1 it was all to play for, and in my opinion this referee killed the game.” In the day’s other game, Ukraine’s Shakhtar Donetsk beat visiting Roma 3-0 and advanced on 6-2 aggregate to reach the quarterfinals for the first time. With Barcelona trailing 2-1 from the first leg in London three weeks ago, Messi scored in the third minute of first-half injury time. But Barcelona defender Sergio Busquets headed Samir Nasri’s corner kick into his own net in the 53rd. After Van Persie was sent off by Swiss referee Massimo Busacca for his second yellow card, Xavi scored in the 69th and Messi got his 45th goal of the season two minutes later after Pedro Rodriguez was fouled by Laurent Koscielny. Van Persie’s attempt that didn’t count, which followed an offside call, was the only shot all night by the usually offense-minded Gunners, who were outshot an incredible 19-0. Barcelona had 68 percent possession and completed 738 passes to Arsenal’s 199. “They attack less. Maybe they play to keep the result,” Barcelona NHL Jerseys coach Pep Guardiola said. “The reality is that they were not able to string together three consecutive passes and they were not able to shoot once on goal.” Messi scored after Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas gave away the ball with a back heel pass. Andres Iniesta played Messi clear, and Messi flicked up and over onrushing goalkeeper Manuel Almunia before volleying the ball into the net. “To talk about if it’s one of Messi’s best goals, there’s no point—he scores such great goals they become normal,” Guardiola said. Almunia had entered in the 19th minute after goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny had dislocated a finger, apparently while stopping a free kick by Daniel Alves. Nasri won the corner kick that led the tying goal by outmuscling Javier Mascherano, starting because Busquets was dropped back to central defense due to Carles Puyol’s knee injury and Gerard Pique’s one-game suspension for yellow card accumulation. Van Persie received his second yellow card in the 56th. The Dutch forward motioned he shot because he didn’t hear the whistle due to noise from the crowd of 95,486 in Europe’s largest stadium. “If there were four, five, six seconds in between, you can make a check. One second? It’s a joke,” Van Persie said of the time between the whistle and his shot. Xavi Hernandez tied the aggregate score on a shot that deflected off Arsenal’s Bacary Sagna. He had collected the ball after David Villa guided Iniesta’s short pass onto his path. Messi’s penalty kick gave him six goals in four games against Arsenal and Almunia. “Again, Leo made the difference,” Xavi said. Busacca gave five yellow cards to the Gunners and none to the Blaugrana. Van Persie was given his first yellow card in the 45th minute for barging into Alves. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger thought the ejection changed the match. “I just spoke to UEFA people, and they are shocked as well,” Wenger said. “You promise a fantastic football match, but what for? How he did it, frankly, it’s embarrassing for the game.” Guardiola said the Arsenal manager had one request for him. “Wenger told me to congratulate the referee,” he said. Messi, the two-time FIFA player of the year, has 45 goals this season and a Barcelona-record 33 in European competition, two more than Rivaldo. He leads the Champions League with eight goals this season. Arsenal had one late chance. With the Gunners needing only to score once to tie the aggregate and win on NBA ALL Star the away-goals rule, substitute Nicklas Bendtner’s late run on goal was thwarted by Mascherano’s tackle. Van Persie had come back from a knee injury and Fabregas, in his first game at Barcelona since leaving its youth academy, had returned from a hamstring problem. “I take full blame for the result tonight,” Fabregas said via Twitter. “One of the worst moments of my life. I apologise.” At Donetsk, Tomas Huebschmann scored in the 18th, Willian in the 58th and Eduardo da Silva in the 87th. Shakhtar has not lost at home in more than two years. Roma defender Philippe Mexes was ejected in the 40th for his second yellow card, for a foul on Luiz Adriano.

Sauer’s 1st NHL goal leads Rangers over Senators

OTTAWA (AP)—While Michael Sauer made MBT shoes his first NHL goal a memorable one, Ottawa’s Matt Carkner(notes) stirred up some bad blood, and perhaps even flicked some at the New York Rangers. Sauer scored his first goal on a power play with 5:19 left to break a tie, and New York went on to beat the Senators 5-3 on Thursday night. The defenseman took a cross-ice pass from Brandon Prust(notes) and drove a slap shot past goalie Brian Elliott(notes) to give New York its first lead. “It’s something you’re always going to remember,” Sauer said. “At every level you remember your first one and it was great that it was a game-winning goal, too. I’m definitely excited.” Carkner got a misconduct added to his roughing major after a fight with Rangers enforcer Derek Boogaard(notes) at 17:29 of the first. Rangers coach John Tortorella refused to comment on what the Ottawa defenseman did as he passed by New York’s bench after the fight. Some Rangers players suggested that Carkner sent blood toward them. “I heard something like that, that he was swiping blood and flicking it at our guys,” forward Brandon Dubinsky(notes) said. “I’m not sure 100 percent.” Carkner denied the accusation. “I was getting off the ice, and maybe I made a gesture,” he said. Mike Fisher(notes) scored twice, Jason Spezza(notes) added a goal, and Elliott made 23 saves for the Senators, who have lost 10 of 13 (3-9-1). Erik Christensen(notes) drew the Rangers even for the third time earlier in the third period. Dubinsky scored into an empty net with 51.9 seconds remaining. Derek Stepan(notes) and Ruslan Fedotenko(notes) also scored for New York, which replied quickly after each of Ottawa’s first two goals. Henrik Lundqvist(notes) stopped 24 shots for the Rangers, who have won seven of 10 despite a 3-1 loss to the Senators on Sunday in the first half of the home-and-home series. Ottawa has been outscored 39-19 in the third period. “We need to clean up that area for sure,” said Senators New Balance Women Shoes forward Nick Foligno(notes), who had two assists. “Third periods are when games are won, so we’ve got to maybe be a little bit more resilient, you know, dig a little bit deeper. That comes from within the team.” Christensen netted his fifth goal 3:30 into the third when his shot from the left corner somehow got past Elliott, who was hugging the right post. “It was a really good effort coming back three times,” Lundqvist said. “I think we were just determined to win this one after a tough loss at home where they got the late goal there. It felt really good the way we responded.” Lundqvist made a sparkling glove save off Foligno on Ottawa’s first shot of the game, after Michal Rozsival(notes) was penalized for high-sticking Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson(notes) 1:33 in, but Foligno passed the rebound to Fisher, who fired in his eighth goal. Stepan tied it 1:46 later with his seventh. Spezza made it 2-1 with Ottawa’s second power-play goal 34 seconds into the second period. Fedotenko tied it at 2 with his fifth goal 69 seconds later. Fisher appeared to make it three goals in 1:34 when he sent a shot past Lundqvist at 2:08, but referee Paul Devorski’s call was overturned when a replay showed that Fisher’s shot struck the crossbar and bounced onto the ice without crossing the goal line before caroming off the left post. Fisher’s second of the game put Ottawa up 3-2 at 8:47. It was Gucci High Shoes his ninth this season.

Crippen complained about US support before death

Général — Posté par tomyly @ 09:21
Nine days before he died in an open-water MBT shoes race, American Fran Crippen sent an e-mail to the head of USA Swimming, complaining about a lack of financial support and the failure to send coaches to “protect the athletes” at meets around the world. While two separate investigations into Crippen’s Oct. 23 death will undoubtedly focus on allegations that world governing body FINA failed to ensure safe conditions for the race in the United Arab Emirates, the actions of USA Swimming are also under scrutiny. Crippen’s e-mail to USA Swimming executive director Chuck Wielgus refers to a plan being pushed by former national team coach Mark Schubert that called for increased compensation and making sure someone was on hand to support and watch out for the athletes at major events. Reached Tuesday by The Associated Press, Schubert confirmed that he decided in early September to appoint national youth coach Jack Roach, a former Marine and beach lifeguard, as the head open-water coach. Schubert said he wanted Roach to attend any open-water meet with at least four American competitors the rest of the year, then make sure a coach or representative was at all the biggest meets beginning in 2011. Under that plan, Roach would have been at the race near Dubai in which Crippen lost his life. “In open water, we always worry about safety,” Schubert told the AP. “It’s not like a swimming pool when somebody goes to the bottom. You see ‘em and you dive in. If you go to the bottom in that sport, nobody sees it and, just like Fran, they find your body two hours later. It’s sickening.” Schubert said he never got a chance to put his plan into effect. He was placed on leave in mid-September and formally fired last month. The only person assisting the U.S. team in the Middle East was the father of a swimmer who paid his own way, leading some to wonder if the national governing body did enough to protect its athletes. Crippen’s coach, Dick Shoulberg, told the AP he’s Nike Shox 2010 convinced the 26-year-old swimmer would not have been allowed to race in potentially dangerous conditions if Roach had been there. “If Mark Schubert had a representative at the meet, they would have said, ‘We’re not swimming,”’ said Shoulberg, who has been outspoken about beefing up safety for an emerging sport that became part of the Olympics in 2008. “I think Fran would be alive if U.S. swimming would’ve had more support for its athletes.” Shoulberg stressed that most of his fury is directed at FINA, claiming the meet was moved on short notice to a course without adequate rescue personnel, and that it shouldn’t have been held anyway because water temperatures were too warm. Crippen failed to finish the 10-kilometer race and his body was found about two hours later. FINA and USA Swimming are conducting separate investigations but have yet to issue their findings. Jamie Olsen, a spokeswoman for USA Swimming, said Tuesday that neither Wielgus nor national team managing director Lindsay Mintenko were aware of any concrete plans to send a coach to Dubai. “I’m not doubting a conversation happened, but it’s not something that was ever brought up with them,” Olsen said. “Certainly the staff is always talking to athletes, coaches and volunteers, so I’m not going to say it never happened. They’re always discussions about what we can do to make things better.” Since Crippen’s death, USA Swimming is considering whether to have support staff at the biggest events, but officials stressed it would be impossible to send a national coach to every meet. “There are races that athletes will continue to go to that are not even on the FINA calendar,” said Paul Asmuth, a former marathon swimmer and adviser to the U.S. open-water program. “There’s races happening every month somewhere around the world.” This has already been a troubling year for USA Swimming on many fronts, including a sexual abuse scandal and the mysterious firing of Schubert, a Hall of Fame coach. Neither side has revealed the reason for his dismissal, other Nike Dunk SB Shoes than to say it had nothing to do with allegations of numerous coaches having improper relationships with underage swimmers. Crippen wrote to Wielgus with his concerns on Oct. 14. The swimmer said he had spent $2,500 of his own money to cover travel costs during the World Cup season and questioned why USA Swimming would not pay for coaches to attend meets, as other prominent swimming nations did. “I believe that not having proper representation is a very poor reflection upon USA swimming,” Crippen wrote. He talked of having “numerous conversations” with officials about the direction of the program and Schubert’s intention “of reimbursing my travel expenses and sending someone to help and protect the athletes at the races.” According to Crippen’s e-mail, the Americans had competed at four of seven World Cup events without any support staff. Bill Rose, coach of the 2008 Olympic team, attended a meet in Mexico at his own expense and worked with seven swimmers. Jack Fabian, father of swimmer Eva Fabian, paid his own way for two other meets, mainly to work with his daughter but also assisting the rest of the Americans. Jack Fabian also attended the race in which Crippen lost his life, but no one was there in an official coaching capacity. “I was very enthused about Mark Shubert’s (sic) plans and believed that this was a great step for Open Water Swimming,” Crippen wrote. “As the year has progressed these conversations have not translated into action.” Crippen’s major concern was someone contaminating the feeding gels and drinks that swimmers rely on over the course of the grueling races, leading to a positive drug test. Floating stations are set up around the course for support staff to hand off the nutrition packs and hydration bottles to the swimmers. “Once at the events, our swimmers are typically on Air Force Boots their own to find assistance,” Crippen wrote. “An open water swimmer needs a coach to represent them at the pre race meetings, coach them during practice, and most importantly, feed them during the event. “I think the last point is the most critical. When an athlete doesn’t have a coach they often have to garner the assistance of local volunteers. In this day and age, it is extremely risky to trust a volunteer in a foreign country with the Gatorade and Gel packs that we are going to consume during the race.” Wielgus wrote back to Crippen four days before his death, saying he had discussed the issues with Mintenko, interim national team leader Jim Wood and assistant executive director Mike Unger. “We thought you raised some legitimate points and I appreciate you sharing your concerns with me in a thoughtful manner,” Wielgus wrote. He said Roach would be calling to discuss some of the suggestions, but the coach never got a chance to talk with Crippen. Roach wound up flying to Dubai to claim Crippen’s body and return it to the U.S. Shoulberg said he’s working with swimmers from around the world, including German champion Thomas Lurz, to ensure there’s not a repeat of what happened in October. “Fran never should have died,” Shoulberg said. “The next kid should Air Yeeyz Kids Shoes never have to die. I want to make sure this sport is safe.”

‘Canes motivate Williams, Hughes

Not being seriously recruited by sports jerseys the Miami Hurricanes still sticks in Notre Dame nose guard Ian Williams’ craw. “They actually called me to come down for a junior day, but they said I was too small,” said Williams, the Altamonte Springs, Fla., native who will be back in action following a late-October knee injury when the Irish take on Miami in the Dec. 31 Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas. How did Miami’s lack of interest make Williams feel? “They’ll find out on…what’s the date of the bowl game? The 31st? The 31st they’ll find out,” Williams said. For Notre Dame senior running back Robert Hughes, the snub from Miami when he was coming out of high school in Chicago was shielded by his love and admiration for the Hurricanes. “Growing up, Miami was one of my favorite teams to watch,” said Hughes, who scored Notre Dame’s game-winning touchdown against USC last weekend. “Watching all those great backs they had at the U. - Clinton Portis, Frank Gore - cats like that…I’ve always been a fan of it. Now going up against them will be great.” The last time Notre Dame and Miami squared off was in 1990 when the No. 6-rated Irish, coached by Lou Holtz, knocked off No. 2-ranked Miami, 29-20. It was Notre Dame second victory over the Hurricanes in three seasons following a four-game winning streak by the Hurricanes. The rivalry was heated, so intense in fact that both schools decided that perhaps it was time to take a step back from the series. Recently, the two schools agreed upon a renewal of the series in Chicago in 2012, Notre Dame Stadium in 2016, and Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens in 2017. Many of the participants in this game weren’t even born Hermes Wallet the last time Notre Dame and Miami played one another in football. “I don’t think it’s going to matter at all,” said Williams of the animosity between the two schools two decades ago. “We’re going to be excited to play whoever or wherever we need to. I think the exciting part will be more for the fans because it’s a(n) historic rivalry.” “It’s more for the fans with the history and tradition,” Hughes concurred. “It will simply be our task to go out there and win. We’ll be focused on that.” Neither Williams nor Hughes thought the firing of Miami head coach Randy Shannon would deter the Hurricanes from putting on a good show. “It’s always tough to lose the head coach,” said Williams, who, along with his teammates, endured the firing of Charlie Weis last year. “For most guys, that’s the reason they went there, just speaking from experience. You’ll go through stages like, ‘What if I had gone here?’ Little things like that. But I know they’ll be suited up and ready to go.” “They’re football players,” Hughes said. “They’ll find a way to get through it. When the lights come on, they’ll play football just like they know how to do.”

AP source: Yankees up offer to SS Derek Jeter

NEW YORK (AP)—The New York Yankees sports jerseys increased their contract offer to Derek Jeter(notes). The team informed Jeter’s side of the new offer during a telephone conversation early Thursday, a person familiar with the negotiations said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no announcement was made. “The ball’s in Derek’s court now, and his agent,” Yankees co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner said later Thursday in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. “It’s up to them.” Jeter’s agent, Casey Close, declined comment. But since negotiations resumed Tuesday, talks have appeared to gain a little momentum. “We don’t know how happy they are. We’ll see,” Steinbrenner said. “There’s no possible way anybody could criticize us for what we’ve offered.” New York opened with a $45 million, three-year proposal last month, then awaited a formal counteroffer from its captain. It was not known whether the new offer improved the value, contract length or both. Before the sides met this week, their first session since Nov. 8, Close had suggested a contract averaging about $23 million for four or five seasons. Steinbrenner thinks talks are progressing well to re-sign closer Mariano Rivera(notes), who like Jeter is a free agent. “I think you can be pretty confident in Mo,” he said. “We’re looking good.” While negotiating with its own players who became free agents, the Yankees are anticipating talks will intensify at next week’s winter meetings with Cliff Lee(notes). Among other team’s free agents, the 32-year-old left-hander is New York’s No. 1 priority. “It’s no secret we want Cliff, and we will do what we can to sheepkin boots get him,” Steinbrenner said. “That’s the bottom line.”

Oceania seeks to replace FIFA representative

Général — Posté par tomyly @ 15:52
AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP)—The 2010 jerseys Oceania Football Confederation believes it has the right to appoint a new FIFA representive to replace suspended vice-president Reynald Temarii, to retain a voice in deciding venues for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. Oceania officials met Saturday and reached the resolution which attempts to clear the way for the confederation to send its acting president, David Chung, to Zurich next week as the 23rd voting member of FIFA’s ruling panel. “An enquiry has been made to FIFA to seek further clarification on this and no further comment will be made until such time as FIFA has responded,” the OFC said in a statement. FIFA declined comment on Oceania’s request Saturday, five days before polling. FIFA previously said Temarii cannot be replaced while he’s appealing the suspension imposed following an ethics probe prompted by an undercover newspaper sting which alleged bribe-taking and vote-rigging in the World Cup bidding process. FIFA said 43-year-old Temarii was sanctioned for breaching three principles in its ethics code relating to loyalty and confidentiality by speaking with reporters posing as lobbyists looking to buy votes. Saturday’s move by the OFC follows reports that it would seek to have Temarii waive his right to appeal his FIFA ban, clearing the way for his replacement. The OFC would then have allowed Temarii to keep his presidency by delaying an election scheduled in 2011 until his one-year FIFA ban expires. It stopped short on Saturday of asking Temarii to waive his appeal and will now test its belief that it can appoint a replacement for its suspended representative. Football protocol normally requires FIFA’s six ED Hardy handbag confederations to hold a full congress of member nations to choose its delegates to the world governing body. However, Oceania believes it can install Chung as a FIFA voting member when its confederation’s 11 member countries are represented. Oceania elevated Chung from vice president’s role when Temarii was provisionally suspended by FIFA on Oct. 20. The Papua New Guinea official said last week he was satisfied that FIFA found Temarii breached only “minor clauses” in the ethics code, and that Oceania would support his appeal. If allowed to vote, Chung would likely be mandated to support Australia’s bid in the 2022 vote, which includes the United States, Japan, South Korea and Qatar. The Sunday Times reported that Temarii was backing the Spain-Portugal bid in the 2018 World Cup race against England, Russia and Belgium-Netherlands. The Oceania executive committee also decided on Saturday that it would not attempt to immediately replace executive member Ahongalu Fusimalohi from Tonga, who got a three-year FIFA ban. The statement said “no replacement will be sought for the vacant OFC executive committee position while the appeal process is still open to Mr. Fusimalohi.”

A first: After equestrian comp, horses leave China

CONGHUA, China (AP)—In scarf an endeavor to rival any quarantine operation anywhere, all of the horses in these misty green hills of southern China have been blood tested and microchipped—the zebras too. The Guangzhou Asian Games featured mainland China’s first major international equestrian event, the result of painstaking efforts to create a zone completely free of equine diseases. And it has already had a positive outcome: China on Monday transported horses off the mainland for the first time in 60 years. The first batch of 26 competition horses left on a plane bound for Europe, the first time since 1949 the international community has accepted horses from mainland China. Even though equestrian events have a tiny following in sports-mad China, the competition has been earning high marks from its well-heeled participants. “We were shocked at the facilities here and with the organization. The services they have here are high-end,” said Majid Al Qassimi, a sheik from the United Arab Emirates who is competing in the jumping competition which continued Monday. “You can compare it with the highest international events.” Outbreaks of equine disease and substandard quarantine procedures had previously prevented China from hosting high-level competition. Competitors could get their horses into China, but not out. During the 2008 Beijing Olympics, equestrian events were held in nearby Hong Kong, which has a prominent horse racing scene. “Last year for the All-China Games, we brought our horses from Hong Kong to China for the competition. Afterward we had to sell them all because we couldn’t bring them back,” said Gerald Kuh, manager of the Hong Kong equestrian team. The Hong Kong Jockey Club partnered with Asian Games organizers to help with equine related expertise and planning for the venue nestled among forested hills in this area known for its hot springs and sweet lychee fruit. One of the first tasks was ensuring the health of the approximately 2,000 horses in the area, as well as the 30 or so zebra at the local zoo. That’s a massive Prada Handbag undertaking to protect the 108 horses imported for the equestrian competition. “You’ve got to go in and blood type them, we do tests on them. Those tests are ongoing, every six months. Those horses are now microchipped … including the zebras. We understand the health status within the whole zone, of every equine that comes in and goes out,” said John Ridley, the club’s director of racing operations. Strict rules around the competition area help prevent outbreak of disease. Anyone entering the stables must walk across a disinfecting mat and thoroughly wash their hands. Fly screens have been installed to keep out bugs that might carry germs. Most horses were quarantined in Germany before flying to China. To keep track of what’s going in and out, competitors had to provide packing lists, right down to the hoof picks in the tack box. “It was strict but it’s good for the sport … because for an epidemic to spread, everyone will blame the Chinese for not doing their job. So this was very good for our horses,” Al Qassimi said. The establishment of a world-class venue is a major step toward nurturing interest in equestrian sports in China, where it is so foreign that assistant venue director Chang Wei had to tell fans: “Do not shout or yell, like at football or basketball … I kindly remind spectators not to scare the horses.” The South Koreans have gold in dressage at the Asian Games, while the Japanese took the top spots in eventing. Saudi Arabia wowed the crowd with near-perfect jumping in the team competition on Monday, with individual finals on Wednesday. The competition is not top-level—equestrian remains dominated by Europeans — but it has brought together an eclectic group of athletes that includes a Saudi prince and other Arab royals, a gold medal-winning Buddhist monk from Japan and Korean teen heartthrob actor Kim Seok. Perhaps most importantly, the competition has been broadcast on Chinese state television, which reaches almost every household in this country of 1.3 billion people. It is sure to find fans among urban Chinese who find the gentility and traditions appealing—in no other sport do athletes compete while “Waltzing Matilda” is softly piped through the arena speakers. “Equestrian is getting more publicity here over the Timberland High Shoes last two weeks than it’s probably had over the last five years. So it all helps the sport grow,” Ridley said. Chinese jumper Zhang Bin says it’s a good start but much more investment is needed for his country to truly develop an equestrian culture. Teammate Yang Hua has said his team bought a horse for him in Germany last year for “very cheap.” “This event is different from ordinary sports like swimming, athletics or pingpong, where there’s not much of an initial investment,” Zhang said. “But with equestrian, it’s impossible to do it without the investment. It’s like F1, you just can’t tell Michael Schumacher to race in a regular Mercedes.”

OXFORD, Ohio (AP)—San Diego State 2010 jerseys needed the biggest comeback coach Steve Fisher’s 12 seasons at the school to beat Wisconsin-Green Bay. Kawhi Leonard scored 23 points and No. 25 San Diego State overcame a 22-point deficit to beat Wisconsin-Green Bay 79-70 on Saturday in a CBE Classic subregional game. The previous largest deficit for the Aztecs—down 28-6—in a victory was 18 in a 69-65 decision over Monmouth on Nov. 22, 2004. “At one point, I leaned over to my son, (assistant coach) Mark, and said, ‘Do you think we’ll score 10 points this half?”’ Fisher said. “They were beating us every way, and we helped set the tone by missing every layup and free throw. We were able to come back by making them take harder shots and getting them out of their rhythm offensively.” Leonard also had 10 rebounds for his 20th career double-double, and Chase Tapley added 14 points to help the Aztecs improve to 3-0 for the first time since the 2007-2008 season. Malcolm Thomas bounced back from a rough start at the free-throw line to finish with 12 points and eight rebounds for San Diego State. The Aztecs shot 29 of 48 (60.4 percent) from the field, but missed all seven 3-point attempts and made just 21 of 36 free throws. Rahmon Fletcher led Green Bay (1-1) with Air jordan 3.5 18 points, Troy Snider added 17, and Bryquis Perine had 11. “They’re very big, long and athletic,” Green Bay coach Brian Wardle said. “They’re tough to beat. They’re a very good rebounding team.” Perine hit a 3-pointer to give Green Bay a 28-6 lead with 11:15 left in the first half. The Phoenix hit 10 of their first 15 shots, including all four 3-point attempts, while San Diego State missed six of its first eight shots, including all three 3-pointers, and Thomas made just one of his first six free throws. “We were thinking we have to come back right now,” Leonard said. “We had to get some stops defensively. We had to think all defense all the time. Everything was going in for them. We knew we had to contest shots. We didn’t come out with any energy. Our mental focus wasn’t there. Maybe the flight and the three-hour (time) change got into us.” But Green Bay went 8:04 without a field goal, allowing the Aztecs to creep back into the game. Thomas scored nine points over the rest of half to help San Diego State cut it to 38-33. The Aztecs opened the second half with a 6-0 run, capped by senior Billy White’s dunk off of Tapley’s alley-oop pass, to take a 39-38 lead. After making their first four 3-pointer, the Phoenix made UGG Classic Short Patent Paisley Boots just two of their last 11.

MIAMI (AP)—LeBron James(notes) will Cheap Nike Shox have his hometowns in mind for the holidays—his new one and his old one. The Akron, Ohio, native is coordinating the distribution of 700 Thanksgiving dinners next week to needy families from the city where he grew up. James won’t be present for the actual delivery of the meals because of Miami Heat games, though his mother and girlfriend will be attending the events. It’s a Thanksgiving with all the trimmings: Turkey, yams, greens, vegetables, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and more. “I’ve always said when I was growing up, being in a small city like Akron, that if I ever became successful or was ever blessed enough to give back to the community, I’ll always do that,” James said before the Heat faced the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday night. “Especially around holiday times, when you’re supposed to be with your family.” The holiday season is already in full swing for the Heat: James also took part in a Thanksgiving-meal giveaway in Miami on Tuesday with All-Star teammate Dwyane Wade(notes) and other members of the organization, and several other Heat players have events scheduled to help less-fortunate families in the coming weeks. James said he’s overseeing next week’s Akron UGG Classic Tall Bomber Jacket-5804 events from afar. The families chosen to be part of the Thanksgiving giveaway are connected to the Urban League and the Akron Public School system. “Even though I’m not going to be there, I was on all the calls and making sure everything is ran right,” James said. “I mean, it’s not like I’m a rookie to the whole situation. I kind of know what needs to be done.”

NORMAN, Okla. (AP)—One cheap ugg boots on sale record at a time, Ryan Broyles is cementing his spot as the greatest receiver ever to play for Oklahoma. Broyles caught three of Landry Jones’ five touchdown passes and broke a few more school records, leading the 19th-ranked Sooners to a 45-7 victory against Texas Tech on Saturday. Broyles caught eight passes for 119 yards and broke Mark Clayton’s career records for receptions and touchdown catches at Oklahoma (8-2, 4-2 Big 12). He also eclipsed his own mark for catches in a season and now holds almost every significant receiving record at the school. “That’s a good UGG Classic Short Patent Paisley Boots feeling,” Broyles said. “It feels even better to win on top of that.” Broyles had the biggest receiving day in Oklahoma history in his previous game on Owen Field, and on Saturday—in addition to the new marks he set— matched Clayton’s career records with eight 100-yard games in a season and 15 in a career. “I’ve said everything you can say about Ryan,” coach Bob Stoops said. “He’s a great player. I love his competitiveness, his toughness. He just has a knack for adjusting to the football like nobody I’ve ever seen, finding the ball and turning for UGG Classic Tall Metallic Boots 5812 it, and he’s got the surest hands of anybody I’ve been around. He just has a great knack for making big plays and consistent, tough plays.” Broyles tumbled backward into the end zone after an acrobatic 29-yard catch in the second quarter and later added an 18-yard touchdown reception and a leaping 8-yard TD grab on a fade route as the Sooners scored 38 unanswered points after trading touchdowns early. Texas Tech (5-5, 3-5) finished its opening possession by scoring on Detron Lewis’ touchdown pass to fellow receiver Darrin Moore out of the wildcat formation, then got shut out the rest of the way. The Red Raiders were stopped on fourth-and-1 in UGG Classic Short Metallic Boots Oklahoma territory twice in the first 18 minutes and then lost all their offensive momentum. “Offensively, we were horrible on third and fourth down. That’s what killed us,” said Baron Batch, who led Tech with 91 yards rushing. “We didn’t ever sustain a real drive. We’d have big plays but had a hard time stringing together big drives.” Jones surpassed 300 yards passing for the seventh time this season, completing 22 of 29 for 317 yards. He also had a 12-yard touchdown pass to DeMarco Murray on Oklahoma’s first possession and a 59-yard score on a deep ball to Kenny Stills. After relying largely on bubble screens that got stuffed in a 33-19 loss at Texas A&M, the Sooners went more vertical in their passing game against the Red Raiders. “I was excited that we were UGG Classic Tall Boots going to take more shots down the field this week, and to see us doing those things and actually hit one was really good for our offense,” Jones said. Texas Tech’s defense allowed season-best 95 yards passing by Blaine Gabbert in an upset of then-No. 14 Missouri last week, but couldn’t do it again. Jones threw for 276 yards and four touchdowns in the first half against the defense that ranks third-to-last in the nation against the pass, guiding the Sooners to a 38-7 advantage. It was the third straight blowout by the home team in the series. The Sooners came up with a memorable 65-21 rout against the No. 2 Red Raiders two years ago, derailing Tech’s bid at perfection in the next-to-last game of the regular season. The Red Raiders got a measure of revenge last season with a 41-13 victory in the rematch, celebrating to Oakley Sunglsses the same song—House of Pain’s “Jump Around”— that the Sooners jubilantly bounced to in 2008. The stakes weren’t nearly so high in this one. Oklahoma bounced back from its fourth straight conference road loss to stretch the nation’s longest home winning streak to 36, in the process keeping alive its chances of winning the Big 12 South title. “It’s pretty special,” said Jeremy Beal, one of 19 Oklahoma seniors who played their last game on Owen Field. “I’ve never lost at home and it’s a great feeling to go through that.” Tech, which has been eligible for a bowl game each of the last 16 years, remained one win shy of bowl eligibility with only nonconference home games against Weber State and Houston left on the schedule. “That was our last conference game and we go 3-5,” first-year coach Tommy Tuberville said. “I thought we had a chance to win four or five if we played well and stayed injury-free.” The Sooners got a scare when Nike Shox NZ Murray went to the locker room in the second quarter with bruised ribs. He returned briefly in the second half and Stoops said he should be able to play moving forward. He had protective padding under his shirt during postgame interviews. Starting defensive tackle Adrian Taylor was lost for the season when he tore his right Achilles tendon and had to be wheeled off the field in the second quarter. Taylor had come back from a gruesome-looking left ankle dislocation sustained in the Sun Bowl in December. Stoops said Oklahoma’s other starting defensive tackle, Casey Walker, may be able toUGG Classic Short Boots return next week after missing the last six games.

NFL's Rooney Rule still in effect for in-season coaching changes

IRVING – If the Cowboys want to gucci shoes remove the interim tag from Jason Garrett's head coaching title in 2011, they will have to satisfy the NFL's Rooney Rule requirements. The Rooney Rule mandates a team must interview minority candidates for head coaching and front-office positions. The league has language in place that covers a team making an in-season coaching move, which the Cowboys did Monday. According to a release from the NFL, "the club must follow the mandatory interviewing process in choosing a new permanent head coach, unless the club had concluded a prior contractual agreement with a member of its coaching staff to become the club's head coach and this contractual agreement had been filed with the League Office at the time it was signed." Garrett does not have such a provision in the contract he signed when he joined the team in 2007. He had the title of assistant head coach added in 2008. In 2003, the NFL ruled Jones' telephone conversation with Dennis Green satisfied Rooney Rule standards after the team had a deal in place with Bill Parcells . In 2007, Jones interviewed minority candidates Todd Bowles, Jim Caldwell , Ron Rivera and Mike Singletary. Packers safety fined: For the second consecutive game a Cowboys opponent was fined by the NFL for a helmet-to-helmet hit that resulted in a penalty during the game. Green Bay safety Nick Collins was fined $50,000 for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Roy Williams, deemed "a defenseless receiver" by the league. Williams remained on the ground for several Nike shox NZ moments but returned to the game. The NFL told Collins "further offenses will result in an escalation of fines up to and including suspension." Sliding ratings: The Cowboys' humiliating 45-7 loss to the Packers earned the team its worst Sunday night local television rating in 14 appearances since Sunday Night Football debuted on NBC in 2006. The game scored a 27.8 rating in Dallas-Fort Worth, down almost 30 percent from the Cowboys' season-opening SNF loss to Washington, which earned a 39.6. That means 306,162 fewer homes tuned in. The game lost almost a third of its audience from a peak rating of 31.7 in the second quarter to 21.2 in the fourth.
